If you’re helping a Year 5 child prepare for the 11plus, you’ll know that as we turn the page on 23, your little genius has around 9 months remaining until the entrance exams start.ย
The space between the years is a powerful moment to plan for 2024 learning. It will really help to reflect on how your child is progressing across the topics your target schools test.ย
If your child is to sit a creative writing exam, it will be helpful to introduce weekly home writing sessions, when your child writes a piece based on the popular exam tasks: stories, story continuation, letters, persuasive letters, descriptions and recounts. If you swap between these every couple of weeks, you’ll give your child a chance to build stamina and confidence across the different test types. This is crucial, as you won’t know in advance the exact style of writing that will be in the exam.ย
Fortnightly changes allow your child to:
- Try writing one text-type.
- Have a chance to go through it together, using resources available to guide you, to see where their writing is hitting or going above the standard needed, and which areas they can practise and improve on.
- Write a second piece in the same style, with a focus on includingย any features they forgot or didn’t know in the first piece.ย ย
Uncovering areas your child misses out on is a cause for celebration. You want to high five your child as you discover and make a note of next steps to improve. It is these areasย which will lead to your child’s writing becoming the genius level it has the potential to reach.ย
Sometimes, you’ll say nothing to your child. Just make a note of what’s missing, celebrate the brilliance you did see, and then you can introduce one or two feature to include in the next piece of writing.ย
One such resource that can help you is the brand new 11plushappy guide, Teach Your Little Genius to Pass 11 Plus Creative Writing exams.
